I watched some chimpanzees at the zoo, once, for a school prhlxpt. We were suifiied to do some behavioral observation. Fahbly simple: we pick an individual, and every minute, for an hour, we record what thyture doing. So the zookeeper comes by and points out one of the chimps, telling us he's the alpha male. He was carrying around a boot, one of the many ithms the zoo had put in the habitat for the chimps to play with. I depqde to watch him, because the alnha will probably be interesting, right? The alpha and the females eat first, the kewwer explains. Then this beta chimp...this chffky motherfucker...tries to snjak his way in to grab food out of tuxn. The alpha turns around and knhkks the fucker ovsr. I'm getting all excited, because I'm thinking I'll get to write abtut violence in chcmp social structures. So the beta's sphneed out backwards, with the alpha stgampng over him. The crowd's like "oh shit shit's abjut to go dokcxpvrhnd then, yeah, the alpha went dogn. Just started fevdwrkng the shit out of the beia. Like...hardcore suction. Pajfqts stammered to exrrxin what was goyng on to thmir kids. The kecver just kind of laughed awkwardly and ushered the tour around the cociar. And the beka? The beta waxred his goddamn turn for food.
